Hi Everyone,

We had some winners from our GGCD Baseball Club at the Capps Medal Presentation at Adelaide Oval last night!

Shane George took out the Division 6 Medal!
Glad you came along, Shane! 😊

Brandon Manzella was named Rookie of the Year and Right Fielder in the Team of the Year squad.
A great accomplishment!

Darren Roberts was named Coach of the Year.
Awesome award and well deserved! A Tommy Lasorda of our time.

AJ Verastegui finished 5th in the Division One vote count for
Baseball SA’s Best and Fairest Player of the Year. Well Done, AJ!

The event was held at the Lindsay Head Terrace. It was a cold and windy night!

Congratulations to all our players who finished in the top 5 of
the Best and Fairest of their respective Divisions.

Division 1 – AJ Verastegui
Division 3 – Alex Earle
Division 4 – Brandon Diplock and Steve Whitehead
(Brandon was a close second to almost winning it again!)
Division 6 – Shane George: TOPPED the Div 6 list and was the MEDAL WINNER!
Division 7 – Sean Davies
Women’s Division 2 – Katie Carpenter
Women’s Division 3 – Madison Portlock

Well done to all!

ARMCHAIR UMPIRE – YOU MAKE THE CALL
Situation: The runner at second base is taking a normal lead as the pitcher delivers to the batter.
The pitch is smashed back up the middle as the shortstop goes to his left to field the hot grounder.

The runner darts back into second to avoid being put out…and the shortstop’s throw to first hits the runner.
Is this interference? Who is OUT?

GGCD GRAND FINAL WINNERS

We had two exciting, Grand Final games at Home last weekend.
The weather was great for our memorable baseball events – warm and sunny days!

Friday’s twilight game saw our Div 2 Women’s team, coached by Ethan Murphy and assisted by Jamie Rix, take on
Sturt with a nail biter win by Kristyn Barry hitting a walk off Home Run for a 7-6 win.

As leadoff batter at the bottom of the last inning and with the sun going down and darkness closing in fast,
Kristyn had two strikes on her count while waiting for her pitch.

Here it came and BANG, she hits a Home Run over left field to end the game with a walk off win!
Well done, Kristyn!

What a way to end the game and the season – and the party that night went on and on and on. 😊

Sunday saw our GGCD Little League Div 2 team, coached by Danun Manson and assisted by
Craig Passmore and Scott Law, take on Goodwood to win their Grand Final in style with a 15-5 win.

Great pitching, hitting, and fielding won the day! Well done, team!

Both teams did our Club proud.
The wins and players will be seen forever in the pennants in our Clubroom.

We had other GGCD teams in the playoffs this season.
Our Senior Div 2 team and Div 4 team both made it to the second round.

We fielded three LL2 junior teams with all three making the playoffs.
Our LL 1 team and JL2 team also made the playoffs this season.

Well done to all.

GGCD WINTER PROGRAMS
During the off season, our Club will be having instructional programs for
our Juniors and Women players at our Baseball Academies to be held at Mega Courts in Windsor Gardens.

Both programs are six weeks in duration and held on Friday evenings.
Junior Academy starts 17 June and Women’s Academy starts 22 July.
We will have a new payment method to be advised soon.

Our Div 1 Seniors’ squad will start their preseason training at Mega Courts for
8 weeks on Thursdays from 4 August starting at 7pm.

WINTER BASEBALL at DODGER TOWN

The Surrey Downs Winter Baseball Club is an off shoot of our Summer Baseball Club.
Many years ago, Moms, Dads, brothers, sisters and friends of players from our summer season
wanted to give baseball a go as it looked like having a bit of fun!

And so, it started out with just a few teams having fun on a Saturday over the winter months.
It’s a casual, laidback program with no regimens of summer ball, just rock up and have fun.

Roger Prime, known as the Commissioner, did all the groundwork to get it up and running and it took off from there.
It was like going to a picnic with mates to have a hit and a run, hence, Picnic Baseball.

Today, it’s a bit more organised with more teams playing and utilising the bar and canteen.
Money realised from the program goes to support the summer club in various ways.
The SDWBC have pledged $20K to the new GGCD training facility to be built this coming season… hopefully.

If you wish to nominate a team or find a team to play in this season,
expressions of interest close at the cob Monday, 4 April 2022.

If interested, please contact Roger at <mailto:roger.prime@bigpond.com> roger.prime@bigpond.com or 0412 023 538.

GGCD PRESENTATIONS
All that’s left of the season is our Presentations.
Seniors, Friday night, 1/4, at the Modbury Plaza Hotel and
Juniors, Saturday, 2/4, at Ridgehaven’s Waterworld.

To attend the Seniors Presentation you must have purchased a ticket on line.
To attend the Junior Presentation, you must have a RSVP via your coach.

Both functions have been ‘sold’ out!
Bumper attendance has overwhelmed both events!

We look forward to seeing you all once again for one
final time before the long break to summer.

Well, hopefully, see you again at the AGM in June. 😊

ARMCHAIR UMPIRE – DID YOU MAKE THE RIGHT CALL?
Since the runner did not intentionally interfere with the thrown ball…
No interference shall be called.

The ball remains in play. No one is out.

COACH’S MOMENT OF THE WEEK – GOOD GRIEF!

Have a great weekend.
Bob
