Hi Everyone,
Last week was the week that was!!!
Not only was it the last week of the Minor Round, but we managed to cram a lot of other activities into it as well.
We were blessed with the whole week of warm weather to make it all more enjoyable at the ballpark.
Thank you to all our volunteer Club Members for making it a successful week!
It all unfolded on Monday when we saw Ethan’s WBL Div 2 team play a Home Twilight v H&G taking home the W on the top ground.
The main diamond saw the activity of the U14/15 teams holding their final training session with some of our T-Ball teams doing the same.
Tuesday saw our Div 1 team play a Twilight at Woodville with a 4-2 win.
At home, our U11s trained hard to win a berth in the playoffs while other T-Ball teams trained for their last time.
Wednesday saw Danun’s and Jason’s U13/2 teams play Home twilight games against Woodville and Northern Districts using both diamonds.
It was another big evening of activity with the last of the T-Ballers training and plenty of ‘fans’ out to watch it all happening.
Thursday was HUGE.
The TTG SAPSASA Softball Carnival was held during school hours at our grounds seeing at least 300 players, parents and teachers enjoying the day.
We supplied our young, Dodgers T-Ball umpires for their games and our Canteen supplied food and drinks -and a very busy day, it was!
That same evening, we had our Junior/Senior Training Session.
From 6pm, all our available juniors (approximately 55 of them) trained with our Div 1, 2 & 3 players doing the coaching.
They were divided into age groups moving approximately every twenty minutes from one station to the next.
The four stations were coached by our Home-Grown Heroes.
It was great to see these same basic fundamentals demonstrated and coached from a different – and younger – voice.
At the end of the session, everyone was treated to a meat pie, pasty or sausage roll of their choice.
Of course, it was our last ‘full on’ Club Night with all the Senior players there too -and the Club was busy once again!
Friday was another BIG evening too.
We had a Home Twilight game on the top diamond between both of our WBL Div 2 teams (Dipper’s and Ethan’s) playing one another!
And on the main diamond was the final game for T-Ball Program with our eight T-Ball teams with finishing with their presentations including a voucher for a sausage and soft drink.
WOW! People everywhere! 😊
Saturday saw three of our Senior teams finishing their last game of the Minor Round at Home. The grounds were busy from morning until late afternoon!
Then, came Sunday – Sponsor’s, Life Members and Playing Life Members Day! Another Gala Event to finish the Minor Round while seeing our three Sunday Seniors teams play Woodville at Home.
Two Junior games also played on the top diamond to keep our grounds full of activity during the day.
What a week it was to finish the Minor Round and the month of February! Now onto the playoffs!
ARMCHAIR UMPIRE – YOU MAKE THE CALL
Situation: Bases are loaded with no outs. A pop fly is hit down the first base line.
The umpire declares ‘Infield Fly if fair”. The ball falls untouched into foul territory…
Then, it bounces into fair territory and settles in front of the first base bag.
Is the batter OUT?
KIEL McSHANE – Military Man
Kiel, one of our long time players, has left us to serve our country.
At almost 18 years of age, he has joined the Army to protect our borders and learn a trade.
After his swearing in ceremony here in Adelaide yesterday, he was off to basic training in Victoria.
His mum, Helena was present for this auspicious occasion (due to covid only one parent was allowed, so dad, Steve, waited outside in the car).
Kiel started playing T-Ball here at the early age of 8 growing in his abilities and love for the game.
He won our Junior Club Person in 2018/2019 and joined our Sunday Seniors Div 3 team just last year.
He was also one of our valued Club Umpires doing our Junior and Senior games.
He started out years ago as one of our T-Ball umpires and won the inaugural Baseball SA Club Umpire of the month in 2018!
We’re gonna miss him, but we wish him all the very best for his future and
look forward to seeing him again wearing the Dodger uniform.
Kiel, thank you for your service.

GGCD ‘U17 SCHOLARSHIPS’ ANNOUNCED for 2021/2022 season
Our Club is very keen to have an U17/Senior League team next season.
While we will have some Dodger players available for this division, we will be shy of the numbers needed to form a team.
Therefore, in a bold move to entice these Senior League aged players to come forward to join us this coming season,
our Club is offering FULL FEES, UNIFORM TOP AND HAT for those successful players at our tryout sessions to be held during our preseason training sessions.
We will be holding two try-out sessions for all and any players wanting to join us for the 2021/2022 season.
The successful players will receive the scholarships.
Please spread the word to all who may be interested in this proposal.
It is open to all Senior League (U17) aged players in the Baseball SA area.
Try outs will be announced prior to our Spring training sessions.
WINTER BASEBALL
Our grounds are used during the winter months by the Surrey Downs Winter Baseball Club.
Sometimes called ‘Picnic Baseball’, you just show up and play. Its casual and its fun.
Games are played every Saturday from 1 May and finishing at the end of August/early September with finals and a trophy.
It’s all about having fun while giving it a go with your mates, sons and/or daughters.
This casual competition is low cost and local and
the teams are made up mainly of our players, their mates and/or family members.
Please email Roger Prime, ‘The Commissioner’ at <mailto:roger.prime@bigpond.com> roger.prime@bigpond.com to nominate your team.
If you want to play, but don’t have a team to join, he can point you in the right direction to join a team.
Umpires will be paid $50 per game. Fees are minimal, but each team is to pay $25 to the umpire before the game.
Check out our Face Book Page ‘Surry Downs Winter Baseball Club’ (SWBC) for more information.

ARMCHAIR UMPIRE – DID YOU MAKE THE RIGHT CALL?
Yes. The batter is OUT.
This is an ‘Infield-Fly’ ruling meaning that any fly ball falling and landing fair into the infield area, the batter is automatically out.
This is the ‘simple’ explanation of this rule for starters…😊
TIP OF THE WEEK – It’s always easy to know when you finally know the rules!
Have a great weekend.
Cheers,
Bob
